Hầu hết trong các bài kiểm tra, bài thi tiếng Anh ở các bậc học đều xuất hiện bài tập ngữ âm (trọng âm và phát âm). Việc rèn luyện dạng bài tập này thường xuyên không chỉ giúp bạn đạt điểm cao mà còn trau dồi khả năng phát âm chuẩn, giúp quá trình giao tiếp tiếng Anh trở nên tự nhiên và có ngữ điệu hơn.
Tổng hợp quy tắc cần nắm trước khi làm bài tập trọng âm
Nhấn trọng âm vào gốc từ
Trong tiếng Anh, có khá nhiều từ được tạo thành bằng cách thêm tiền tố hoặc hậu tố vào một gốc từ. Các từ có hậu tố – ment, – ness, – less, – ship, – en, – ful, – able, – ing, – er/or, – hood, – ous thì trọng âm vẫn nhấn như ở từ gốc. Bạn chỉ cần xác định đúng từ gốc và nhấn trọng âm tiếng Anh theo từ đó.

Dependent /dɪˈpen.dənt/ (lệ thuộc)
Independent /ˌɪn.dɪˈpen.dənt/ (độc lập)
Beauty (n) /ˈbjuː.ti/ (đẹp)

Cách đánh trọng âm những từ chứa vần đặc biệt, có tiền tố, hậu tố
- Danh từ chỉ môn học: Trọng âm cách âm tiết cuối một âm tiết.
Ví dụ:
Geography /dʒiˈɑː.ɡrə.fi/ (địa lý)
Geology /dʒiˈɑː.lə.dʒi/ (địa chất)
Methodology /ˌmɛθəˈdɒləʤi/ (phương pháp luận)
Biology /baɪˈɒləʤi/ (sinh học)
Psychology /saɪˈkɒləʤi/ (tâm lý học)
- Các từ có đuôi how, what, where,… thì trọng âm chính được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ví dụ:
anywhere /ˈen.i.weər/ (bất cứ đâu)
somewhat /ˈsʌm.wɒt/ (phần nào)
- Hầu hết các tiền tố không nhận trọng âm.
Các tiền tố under-, dis-, re-, un-, im-, il-, non-, ir-, over-, en-,… trong từ sẽ không làm thay đổi trọng âm.
Ví dụ:
discover /dɪˈskʌv.ɚ/ (phát hiện)
remove /rɪˈmuːv/ (di dời)
destroy /dɪˈstrɔɪ/ (hủy hoại)
- Trọng âm sẽ không được đánh vào các âm nhẹ như /ə/ hoặc /i/

- Danh từ tận cùng có chứa ate, ite, ude, ute: Trọng âm cách âm tiết cuối một âm tiết.
Ví dụ:
Graduate /ˈgrædjʊət/: Người đã tốt nghiệp
Appetite /ˈӕpitait/: Sự ngon miệng
Altitude /ˈæltɪtjuːd/: Độ cao
Institute /ˈinstitjuːt/: Viện nghiên cứu
- Tính từ có tận cùng bằng ary, ative, ate, ite: Trọng âm cách âm tiết cuối một âm tiết.
Ví dụ:
Imaginary /ɪˈmædʒ.ə.ner.i/: Tưởng tượng
Imitative /ˈɪmɪtətɪv/: Bắt chước
Appropriate /əˈprəʊprɪɪt/: Thích hợp
Opposite /ˈɑː.pə.zɪt/: Đối diện
- Động từ có tận cùng là ate, ude, ute, fy, ply, ize, ise: Trọng âm cách âm tiết cuối 2 âm tiết. Với trường hợp động từ chỉ có 2 âm tiết, trọng âm sẽ nằm ở âm tiết cuối.
Ví dụ:
Decorate /ˈdek.ər.eɪt/: Trang trí
Elude /ɪˈluːd/: Lẩn tránh
Persecute /ˈpɜːsɪkjuːt/: Hãm hại

- Động từ có 2 âm tiết: Hầu hết trọng âm được đánh ở âm tiết cuối. Trường hợp động từ có tận cùng là er, ern, en, ie, ish, ow, y thì trọng âm sẽ nằm ở âm tiết đầu.

Depend /dɪˈpend/: Phụ thuộc
Unlock /anˈlok/: Mở khóa
Enter /ˈentə/: Đi vào
Suffer /ˈsʌfə/: Chịu đựng

- Trọng âm rơi vào âm gần cuối từ có tận cùng là tion, sion, ic, ance, ious, ical, ive, ous, cial, ory.

- Những từ có âm cuối là ade, ee, eer, ese, esque, mit, pel, press, rupt, sist, oo, cur, dict, ect, fer, ette, self, tain, test, tract, vent, vert… sẽ có trọng âm cố định ở những âm tiết này.

Cách đánh trọng âm của danh, tính, động từ 2 âm tiết
- Hầu hết các danh từ và tính từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ví dụ:
Monkey /´mʌηki/ (con khỉ)
Baby /’beibi/ (em bé)
Flower /ˈflaʊə/ (hoa)
Instant /ˈɪnstənt/ (lập tức)
- Danh từ hoặc tính từ chứa nguyên âm dài ở âm tiết thứ 2 thì trọng âm sẽ nằm ở chính âm tiết đó.

- Hầu hết động từ và giới từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm sẽ nằm ở âm tiết thứ hai.

- Một số động từ chứa âm ngắn ở âm tiết thứ hai thì trọng âm sẽ nằm ở âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ví dụ:
Enter /ˈentər/ (đi vào, bắt đầu)

Open /ˈoʊ.pən/ (mở)
- Từ chỉ số lượng: Nếu kết thúc bằng đuôi -teen thì trọng âm sẽ nằm ở cuối, kết thúc bằng đuôi -y trọng âm sẽ nằm ở âm tiết đầu tiên.

Cách đánh trọng âm của từ có 3 âm tiết trở lên
- Nếu danh từ, tính từ, động từ có âm tiết cuối là /ə/ hoặc /i/ và kết thúc bằng phụ âm thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào âm thứ 2.
Ví dụ: consider /kənˈsɪdər/ (xem xét) , remember /rɪˈmembər/ (nhớ)
- Nếu danh từ có 3 âm tiết mà âm tiết thứ 2 chứa /ə/ hoặc /i/ thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ví dụ: exercise /’eksəsaiz/ (bài tập) , paradise /ˈpærədaɪs / (thiên đường)
